The Chiwara is a mystical Antelope revered by the
Bambara People of Mali. It
is said that the Chiwara introduced both agriculture and the farming
know-how to the Bambara People.
Usually in pairs, (the male
and the female), the Chiwara symbolizes fertility and
abundance. They are both incorporated in religious and
spiritual ceremonies such as planting and harvesting ceremonies.
These ceremonies are usually held before the dry and rainy
seasons. Typically, both a female and a male dancer wear the
Chiwara as a headdress and dance together as a
couple.
