Kanaga masks are normally carved in wood and originate from the Dogon people (Mali).  The Kanaga mask is usually used in purification ceremonies.  Souda 's version of the Kanaga mask is not the typical wooden Kanaga mask.  It is a wooden carpet shaped sand painting that has Kanaga mask is placed in the middle, surrounded by magical leaves.  At the top of the painting lies the sun surrounded by one crocodile at each end and at the bottom lies the moon and planets surrounded by two crocodiles.
