The Chiwara is a mystical Antelope
revered by the Bambara People of Mali.
It is said that the Chiwara
introduced both agriculture and the farming know-how to the
Bambara People. Usually in pairs, (the male and the female), the
Chiwara symbolizes fertility and abundance. They are both
incorporated in religious and spiritual ceremonies such as
planting and harvesting ceremonies.These ceremonies are usually
held before the dry and rainy seasons. Typically, both a female
and a male dancer wear the Chiwara as a headdress and dance
toghter as a couple..
