The Yoruba door
Souda’ s door panel is inspired by
the wooden door panel found amongst the Yoruba people of
Nigeria. This piece of art is a perfect example of the
influence of African mythology in African art. The motifs and
symbols engraved have specific meanings. For example, the twins who
are represented at the bottom of the door are an important element
in the cosmology of the Yoruba people. They also represent the
duality of humans (the female and the male). The snake at the
top of the panel, especially the non poisonous snakes such as the
python is often deemed sacred hold magical and protective virtues.
Finally, the woman holding the sun on her right hand and the
moon on her left represents "Mother God" balancing
in harmony both the masculine (sun) and feminine (moon) energies.
Note that Souda's heritage is both
Songhay (Mali) through her father and Yoruba (Nigeria) through
her mother. o.n why that some of Souda B.’s
